Mince – more than a meatloaf

“What’s for dinner, Mum, I’m starving?!”

That familiar greeting from famished children is often the first cry we hear upon their arrival home, but coming up with dinner solutions that are delicious, appealing and economical can be a triple challenge for the busy housewife. While there is always the option of resorting to old standbys, attempting a new twist on an old favourite is a sure way to keep hungry families happy and mince seems to tick all the boxes; endlessly versatile, very economical and a great starting point for new family favourites.

Typically, mince is meat ground or minced very fine, and can be of beef, lamb, pork, chicken or turkey, or even a combination. Beef Mince is also known as ground beef or hamburger, particular in the United States. Unlike other types of meat which can get dry and tough when reheated, mince has a low percentage of fat that creates supreme flavour and reheats well, making it double for lunch or dinner the next day. Cook once, eat twice, with maximum flavour in minimum time.

With a bit of daring, minced lamb can be combined into meatballs with rosemary and garlic, evoking the aroma of a full lamb dinner. Spice up beef mince with chili powder, paprika, garlic and onion, and you will have the base for Mexican enchiladas, or burritos. Add some apricot preserves to minced lamb, and you’ll get the exotic flavour of Morocco. Just choose the flavours from your favourite cuisine, start with a package of mince, throw in a few pantry staples, and you’ve got yourself a delicious, low cost meal.
