Allspice. . . or All Spice?

Maybe I’m the only one who ever thought that Allspice was actually a blend of several sweet spices!

But lo and behold, it’s actually a wonderful aromatic spice with impressive health benefits, all its own!  Who knew?

Allspice (one word!) is a superb spice, used most often in savory West Indian cooking. It is made from the dried fruit from the pimenta tree native to the West Indies.  The unripe berries are dried in the sun, causing them to turn brown and resemble peppercorns.

Though commonly used in seasoning meat dishes such as Jerk Chicken, it can be used to replace a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove.  In fact, many are under the impression that ground allspice is indeed a combination of these three!

There are 6 Impressive Health Benefits of Allspice

  1. Boosts immune system and dental health
  2. Aids in maintaining a healthy heart
  3. Rich in antioxidant properties
  4. Aids in digestion
  5. Helps to improve blood circulation
  6. Gives relief from arthritis, gout, muscle aches and hemorrhoids
