The week is half over, at least three days done
Sunday’s leftovers are used up and gone.
There’s no motivation, no need for a show
And the interest is waning, the confidence low
In the musty old recipes, oh what a bore,
I wish there were something we’ve not had before!
Not Henry’s hamburgers nor Dad’s favourite stew,
Not pasta for Missy – get it off the menu!
All too monotonous, just full of tedium
Lacklustre, boring, and so on, ‘ad nauseum’.
Then out of the blue comes a fresh revelation!
I’ll try something novel! An El Gusto creation!
I’ve drooled over pictures, with licking of lips,
Watched all the videos, noted the tips,
But when it comes time to put food on the plate,
The same old selections just re-generate.
But today is the day! If it takes me three hours,
I’ll create something new that the family devours.
I will not delay, but with notepad in hand,
Head to Campus & Co – the variety is grand!
The options are endless as I race down the aisles
With a hundred ideas and a face full of smiles.
We’ll try couscous with shrimp, or chicken potstickers,
(Never heard of before! Are they good finger-lickers?)
Quesadillas with sauce – that would be jalapeno,
A new slate of flavours which taste Mexican-o.
How about some Shakshuka? That’s eggs fit for dinner,
Or spanakopita, a Greek certain winner?
With a good dose of daring, a vacation of sorts,
I’ll give them Italian, without the passports.
When my cart overflows with fresh produce and frozen
and boxes are ticked, and the recipes chosen,
It’s home to the kitchen, apron strings tied;
Time to get started on roasted and fried.
The veggies need prepping, the sauces a-stirring,
The oven is hot, and the mixer is whirring!
A delicious aroma soon spreads through the air
As finishing touches I carefully prepare.
One dish then another is successfully plated
And dad and the kids have now congregated.
Dad sighs with contentment, his chin he is wiping,
And then looks in vain for some seconds for swiping.
With wide eyes of wonder, and appetites sated,
The plates are wiped clean, the grumbles placated.
And I smile to myself, as I briskly wash dishes,
I’ll waste no more time on sighing and wishes,
But from today and now on, those days in mid-week
When boredom sets in and the spirit is weak
I’ll remember El Gusto and the work that they do
to keep us well-fed and inspired – Thank you!
